New Law Takes the Fun out of Snow Days for Kids in School

A new bill signed by Gov. Tom Wolf earlier this month is taking the fun out of snow days by allowing schools to turn these unexpected days off from school into work-from-home school days, writes Claire Sasko for Philadelphia magazine.

According to the law, snow days will now be “flexible instructional days.” During flex days, school districts approved by the state Board of Education would provide students with pre-arranged lesson plans. These would include information on how to use technology, such as Internet, laptops, and phones to conduct a somewhat normal school day.

Schools would also have to plan for students or employees who do not have access to this technology. Also, it requires that schools take attendance on these days.

One advantage of this is that flexible instructional days would count toward the 180 days of instruction mandated by the state. However, they are not mandatory, with public, charter, and private schools able to opt into the program.

The state’s Department of Education will post application forms for schools that want to establish flex day plans on its website later this month.
