Herr’s offers visitors to its factory in Nottingham a tour that gives them a glimpse into the process of making some of America’s favorite snacks, writes Alexandria Hoff for CBS Philly.

The company was founded in 1946, when Jim Herr bought a small potato chip company. It quickly grew from there.

“For years and years, we had regular potatoes and that was it,” said Herr’s Vice President of Marketing Bob Clark.

The first new flavor – barbecue – was added in 1958, and for years, this was the only other option to its plain chips.

However, today, the company offers around 40 different flavors of chips, as well as various other snacks.

“We have a whole team of sensory experts, and it’s all about taste-testing,” said Peter Graziano of Herr’s Foods Research and Development team.

The tour brings hundreds of visitors to the factory daily. They get to see the process that transforms the humble potato into the company’s signature snack. The chips then get shipped out of the door in their easy-to-eat, prepackaged format, ready to hit shelves across the country.
