Former Delaware County congressman, U.S. Senate candidate, and three-star admiral Joe Sestak launched his presidential bid over the weekend, writes Jonathan Tamari for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sestak, a Democrat and Cardinal O’Hara graduate who has often clashed with Democratic insiders during his political career, unveiled his campaign website on Saturday. He then announced a kickoff event for the next day in Waterloo, Iowa.

“I’d like to be that president who serves the American people the way they deserve to be served,” said Sestak.

“Admiral Joe” is the 24th entrant into a crowded Democratic primary. He surprised some of his longtime supporters with his decision to run for President.

Before this latest political foray, Sestak had served two terms in Congress before running for Senate in 2010. He won the primary, but narrowly lost to Sen. Pat Toomey in the general election. He tried again six years later, when he walked 422 miles across Pennsylvania to reintroduce himself to voters. But party insiders rallied behind Katie McGinty, who beat him in the Democratic primary.

Now, Sestak is the only person to join the race to have served in office in Pennsylvania. He had delayed his entry while his daughter successfully battled brain cancer.
