Berwyn Teen, Swimming Wunderkind Ready for the Challenges He’ll Face in College

Brendan Burns

Berwyn teenager Brendan Burns, an elite swimmer who just graduated from Conestoga High School, is ready to dominate the next-level competition when he arrives on campus at Indiana University, writes Matt Cohen for the Indiana Daily Student.

Burns, who preferred baseball early on, started taking swimming more seriously when he was 10 years old. As part of the Upper Main Line YMCA club team, he participated in the Pennsylvania YMCA state championships and won the 50-yard butterfly.

Since then, his swimming has rapidly improved. He joined the team at Conestoga, while continuing to train with his YMCA team.

Since his freshman year, he has not lost an individual race on the high school level. His long list of accomplishments includes being a three-time state champion in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke.

Last year, Burns set the national public high school record in the 100-yard butterfly. This year, he did the same in the 200-yard freestyle.

So far, he has been his only competition in the pool. However, once he joins the Hoosiers, he will face a new challenge.

“When I get to Indiana next year, I will be nowhere close to who the best swimmer in the pool is, which is both daunting and exciting,” said Burns.
