Landenberg Native Erin Matson Fills Legendary Shoes as UNC Field Hockey Coach
23-year-old Landenberg native and Unionville High School grad, Erin Matson, has taken the reins as the coach for the University of North Carolina, succeeding the legendary Karen Shelton, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.
Matson, a former player who helped the Tar Heels clinch four national titles during her five years on the team, is not just a familiar face.
She has a stellar 89-8 record and is a three-time winner of the Honda Sports Award. Now she’s the youngest head coach in Division I sports.
Matson’s journey with field hockey began at the age of six, when her mother Jill, a former player at Yale University, introduced her to the sport.
Her choice to join UNC was driven by familiarity, as it “felt like home” to her.
Despite being fresh out of college (and even still having friends on the team), Matson has embraced responsibility with an unyielding spirit and a robust support system.
“If the first few months are an indication, she’s hit the ground running,” praised Shelton, a West Chester alumna.
