Phoenixville Area High School alumni honored their classmate, John Polefka, on the 50th anniversary of his combat death in Vietnam by establishing a scholarship fund in his name, writes Kathy Boccella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The John A. Polefka Memorial Scholarship Fund was started last year to aid students who are joining the military or planning to study criminal justice.

The effort was spearheaded by Chas Kopp, a 1968 graduate of Phoenixville. He said that alumni going to their 50th reunion thought it was a great idea to honor their fallen classmate and the sacrifices that young people of that generation made in Southeast Asia.

“I was like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty remarkable’ — I was floored,” said Kirsten Paxson, Polefka’s niece.

Now in its second year, the fund has managed to raise close to $18,000 from donors who attended school with Polefka.
