Local Car Dealer Refuses to Let Age Stand in Way of Challenging Himself, His Employees

Fred Beans, 80, who owns 20 car dealerships in southeastern Pennsylvania, including ones in West Chester and Devon, is not letting age stand in the way of challenging himself and his employees, writes Jen Murphy for The Wall Street Journal.

Beans celebrated his latest birthday by doing 125 push-ups. He started the annual challenge eight years ago, to help keep fit throughout the year.

He also has never considered retiring. He started his business in Doylestown in 1959 with only one employee. Now, his empire has grown to almost two dozen dealerships with 1,750 employees.

To ensure he can continue working 10-hour days, Beans hired a personal trainer just before his 70th birthday. He worked with trainer Todd Soura to improve both his balance and strength and set the goal of doing 100 push-ups nonstop on his 72nd birthday.

“At the start, boy, did I struggle,” he said.

But Beans persisted and managed to accomplish his goal.

“I try to encourage my employees to work toward a goal each month by holding monthly fitness challenges,” he said
