The family of Pennsylvania State Trooper Kenton Iwaniec, who was killed by an impaired driver in Chester County 11 years ago, visited the Freeman Auditorium at Penn State to talk about his life and the effects of impaired driving, writes Greg Metz for the Daily Collegian.

Iwaniec, who was stationed at the Avondale Barracks, died on March 28, 2008 just hours after a head-on collision caused by a driver who crossed the center line of Route 41 in Chester County.

The driver’s blood alcohol concentration was more than four times the legal limit, and he was also under the influence of illegal drugs.

Iwaniec’s father Ken, his mother Debbie, and his sister Acacia all spoke at the event.

“It is our obligation to be alert, be aware of our surroundings, and not be impaired while we do that,” said Ken.

To honor Kenton, the Iwaniec family often speaks about potential changes to DUI laws.
