Tuesdays with Michael: Five Benefits to Using Hiring Assessments

Two weeks ago, I touched on Job Matching and how important it is to put the right people in the right positions. I mentioned the Achiever Assessment Report, and I want to dive into more detail about how this assessment can benefit you and your company.

If you are not using assessments for hiring, here are the reasons you should. If you already are, make sure you are getting these five benefits:

  1. The Achiever Assessment Report provides a clear and objective view of the candidate for hire. How many times have you interviewed someone based on your impression from a resume and realized the resume was more than a little over-exaggerated? Or even worse, have you ever hired people based on your impressions from interviews and then found that they were a terrible fit for the job? The Achiever Assessment Report eliminates subjectivity from the decision-making process and provides you with the data you want and need to prevent these mistakes. This saves you time and money and serves as evidence of “due diligence” in your hiring procedures.
  2. Creates a benchmark for comparison of the applicant with the ideal candidate for the position. The Achiever Assessment Report gives hiring managers information about candidates in six mental aptitudes and 10 personality dimensions and shows how the individual’s scores measure up to the best. This takes the guess work out of hiring and increases the probability that this person is not only a high performer but will perform well in that job. The report even provides a score for distortion, which lets you know to what level the candidate may be exaggerating on the assessment.
  3. The cost of a bad hire far exceeds the cost of an assessment. Our partner, TTI Success Insights, lists the following as the costs associated with a bad hire: job advertisements, interview costs, training cost, and loss of productivity. All of this is in addition to paying a salary to someone who is not performing. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average cost for each bad hire can equal 30 percent of that individual’s earnings. For an employee earning $50,000, the real cost to your company would be $75,000.
  4. Provides insight for managers to utilize in interviewing and training and development after hire. The Achiever Assessment Report gives managers the information they need to create the most relevant and appropriate questions for interviews and guides managers in determining how to best maximize the employee’s strengths after hiring.
  5. Improves individual and organization performance. I believe all people have innate abilities, but these abilities are not all the same. A fish may be the best swimmer in the world, but if you ask it to climb a tree, it will never be able to do it. The two most important considerations in hiring are will this person be a high performer in this role and will they like it? The person you hire must be the right fit for the job. If not, everyone suffers.

If you are the CEO or COO of a business responsible for hiring, we want to help you move your organization in the direction of its goals. E-mail catalyst@achievable.com before Feb. 25 for one free achiever assessment.
