Reusable Haagen Dazs and Procter & Gamble containers will soon hit the shelves in some Pennsylvania stores thanks to TerraCycle, a recycling business based in Trenton, and its Loop platform, writes Alan Yu for WHYY.

TerraCycle founder Tom Szaky has the ambitious goal of reducing waste. He has already made some progress with recycled diapers and shampoo bottles made from plastic waste collected from beaches. But he realized he would have to go further to help solve the waste problem.

Now, he is bringing the reusable containers to Pennsylvania through the Loop platform. Shoppers can sign up online, and go to participating grocery stores to get ice cream, shampoo, laundry detergent, and some other products in reusable containers.

Shoppers do not need to clean the packaging, just return it to the store. TerraCycle will collect the containers, clean them, and send them to the manufacturers to be refilled and reused. The price of the products should stay around the same, although some may cost more.

“Today, when you buy, say, some Tide laundry detergent, you buy the detergent but you’re also paying for 100 percent of the price of that currently single-use package,” said Szaky.
