Purple Hearts Reunited reached out to the family of 2nd Lt. Donald A. McClure several weeks ago to let it know that it found a military award that belonged to McClure. The nonprofit uses its resources to seek out and then purchase military commendations on eBay. This is part of its nationwide mission to return misplaced medals of valor to their rightful owners.

The family was not aware that McClure was the recipient of a WWI Wound Certificate, which predates the Purple Heart. Service members who received the certificate were also eligible to receive a Purple Heart, which the family did have.

In the letter he sent home from France in 1918, the 22-year-old described the severe leg injury he had suffered.

The certificate brought back memories of a man who died in 1965 at the age of 69. “We just started talking about my grandfather and I saw pictures I’ve never seen before,” said McClure’s grandson, Marc.
