Andrew Forsthoefel shares the stories of people he encountered on his 4,000-mile walking journey in his book Walking to Listen, writes Jim Sullivan for The Daily News of Newburyport (Mass.).

Forsthoefel, a native of Chicago, graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont eight years ago, but said he was not done learning.

In an attempt to get to know as many people as he could, he embarked on an 11-month trek from Chadds Ford to New Orleans, then to Half Moon Bay, Calif.

During his walk, he recorded interviews with the many people he met along the way. He also developed a practice he refers to as “trustworthy listening,” something he believes can only come from a genuine interest in hearing other people.

“I just felt that something was missing, and I felt compelled to embark on this long walk,” he said. “I was walking to listen; it was really just that simple.”

Forsthoefel completed his walk in 2012 and published his book in 2017. He is now on the road once again, this time to promote his book.
