Actress and entrepreneur Jessica Myhr recently relocated to Chester County from New York City and brought her image consulting business with her. Her goal? Empowering people to express their true selves, ultimately inspiring a transformation from the inside out.

While pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting at Rutgers, Myhr worked with an image consultant as part of the curriculum, which sparked an interest in a potential career.

“I realized I loved the process,” said Myhr. “I was still figuring out who I was, and I ended up helping all of my friends and classmates with image advice. I also loved shopping for people. I just did it because I loved it and did it for 10 years. Then, I thought I should probably start charging for my services, because as it turns out, I am really good at it.”

As Myhr continued to make ends meet as a working actress in New York City, she took on some odd jobs, in addition to auditioning and acting, in order to pay the rent. One of the more memorable jobs had her working for a company that represented authors of illustrated children’s books, which is how she first learned about branding. Eventually, she became the brand manager for the Olivia series of children’s books.Valentine's Day Banners

“Essentially, when I learned what licensing and branding were, I had a really natural inclination for it,” said Myhr. “It was translating the core values of a brand into a product. That translation is what I was curious about and what really fascinated me.”

That on-the-job training in managing and promoting a brand convinced Myhr that she could finally make her own transition into a consulting business for people who need help revealing, promoting, and expressing themselves.

“My business was taking off, and I wondered when to go full time,” she said. “I knew no one was doing it the way I was doing it, so that’s how my company, Inherent Style, was born – out of this idea that style lives within us. My tag line is ‘From Inside Out,’ and that is exactly how I work. I give people a methodology to figure out what their style is and how to express themselves in an authentic way.”

Myhr’s website for Inherent Style is an introduction to the services she provides for individuals to gain the skills they need to look their best – whether they are looking for better career opportunities or simply to update their image. Her introductory video discusses how “inherent style” is about the person, not the clothes. She also talks about being interested primarily in what her clients want to communicate from the inside, to how it relates to one’s best self on the outside.

Her current services include wardrobe assessment, body type and color analysis, personal shopping, and styling, as well as marketing and image strategy. She is planning to expand her offerings for 2019, including virtual styling sessions for those who don’t live in Chester County.

“I have worked with all ages and genders,” she said. “And I have found that this is the kind of work where your ethnicity or your age or gender doesn’t matter – it’s something that everyone can use, at any point in their lives.”

Myhr fell in love with Chester County five years ago when she worked with Theater with a View, an outdoor theater company in Pottstown. And once her husband was offered a teaching job at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts at the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School, based in West Chester, they made the move from New York to Downingtown.

Though she returns to New York every other week to visit clients, Myhr is working on building her client base in this area.

“I definitely want to be involved locally in Chester County,” she said.

The self-proclaimed image cheerleader envisions her local clients to be everyone from CEOs to those in career transition, to new moms and stay-at-home moms, to those in the acting profession. While she still pursues acting in local productions, what drives Myhr and her business is an inherent desire to help people find and communicate their true selves.

“When I talk about myself, it’s as an anti-stylist,” she said. “I’m not going to tell you what’s trendy or just give you a makeover and then leave. My work is really so much deeper than that. I take the time to really get to know my clients, and know what is happening in their lives, and then try to reveal who they really are inside. In the process, they pick up more tools of empowerment, so they can make choices for themselves and feel more confident in doing so.”
