Shifting voting patterns in Chester and Delaware counties are making the re-election of moderate Republican Tom Killion uncertain, writes Ed Mahon for WHYY.

Killion, whose term in the state Senate is up in 2020, saw his good friend and fellow moderate Tom McGarrigle voted out in the latest election in favor of Swarthmore Mayor Tim Kearney.

Killion, though, remains undaunted.

“You can’t worry,” he said. “That’s the game we’re in. It’s what we chose to do.”

According to Killion, he probably represents the most diverse district in the state. Pennsylvania’s Ninth Senatorial District is split between Delaware and Chester counties. It includes Chester, the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex, Wawa’s headquarters, and the mushroom farms around Kennett Square.

“I have the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor,” said Killion.

And while he thinks the Republican caucus has moved further to the right, he believes the leadership will hear him out.

“They get it,” Killion said. “They understand the issues in the southeast. I just have to speak louder.”
