Amidst growing criticism of salty and fatty snack foods, Nottingham-based Herr’s is looking to the future with healthier snacks, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

However, according to the company’s president and CEO, Ed Herr, there have been some obstacles in helping people transition to more nourishing snacks.

“The supermarkets won’t give us space for them,” he said.

This means that while the company has a division exclusively committed to producing healthier foods for consumers, they do not sell fast enough. They are also not attractive for local grocers uninterested in having slow-moving inventory on their shelves.

People still prefer the less healthy chips, puffs, and curls that have kept Herr’s in business for more than seven decades. The company is still following the pattern of steady growth as the family’s third generation prepares to take over the reins.

Started by the current CEO’s father, the three grandsons of the founder have been moving into positions of greater responsibility. The goal is for them to become top executives after their father retires in seven years.

“What we’re talking about is sustainability,” said Herr. “We want to keep it going.”
