Following the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory, WIP has decided to officially end the popular Wing Bowl, writes Rob Tornoe for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The end of the wing-eating contest was announced by WIP hosts Angelo Cataldi and Al Morganti, who founded the event 26 years ago.

Morganti came up with the idea for the event to replace the void created by the Eagles’ inability to reach the Super Bowl. However, now that they’ve won the Lombardi Trophy, the reason for the contest is gone.

Every year, the event – filled with wings, wingettes, and raucous Eagles fans – drew almost 20,000 people to the Wells Fargo Center. It was held early on the Friday before the Super Bowl. Among the celebrities who have attended are former NBA star Dennis Rodman and musician Coolio.

During the 2018 event, Molly Schuyler won her third Wing Bowl championship and set a new record by devouring 501 wings.

“We had a lot of conversations, and a little bit of frustration on all sides,” said David Yadgaroff, Philadelphia market manager for WIP’s parent company, Entercom. “But I think we’ve come to a place where this is the right thing to do.”
