Payne Pachuda, a graduate of West Chester East High School and a sophomore at Ohio State University, won the national championship for his age group (17-19) in the long-course triathlon last weekend in Miami, according to a report from USA Triathlon.

The competition included a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run.

Pachuda, who has been a lifeguard with the YMCA of Greater Brandywine since 2015, encountered difficult conditions throughout the day, with heavy rain in the morning and rising temperatures later on.

However, he overcame the obstacles and emerged victorious to become the back-to-back champion in his age group.
