Caitlin Abate uses mostly recycled wood for the treasures she creates at her shop, HoneyBadger Woodworks, in Kennett Square, writes John Chambless for the Chester County Press.

The massive waving bear she carved out of wood has become a landmark that draws people into her shop. Abate, a Kennett High School graduate, discovered her love for creating things out of wood through her DIY family when she was a child.

Abate majored in sculpture at Penn State before going to grad school at Temple’s Tyler School of Art, where she earned her master’s degree. However, she soon switched to carpentry, starting HoneyBadger Woodworks in 2012 with her business partner Jenna Price.

“It’s been insane,” said Abate, whose YouTube videos have been viewed thousands of times. “People pull over and say, ‘What are you doing in there? Can you fix something for me?’”

One of the greatest satisfactions of her job is saving wood and creating something new.

“I like the aesthetics of the wood,” she said. “I like the way it looks.”
