With an increasing number of retailers putting messages of female empowerment on various pieces of clothing, women across the country have found a new way to express their activism, writes Ellie Silverman for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to Michelle Legaspi Sanchez, executive director of the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls, this is important for the many high school students she has worked with in recent years. She said that, while it may be hard for students to articulate their beliefs about empowerment of women, wearing a shirt with a positive message can bring them confidence.

Another positive aspect of promoting activism this way, Sanchez said, is that it has been unifying regardless of girls’ political stances.

“We feel like the apparel is really a part of a larger conversation,” said Sanchez. “It helps give voice and spark dialogue.

“It crosses political lines.”
