When was the last time you seriously stopped and thought about your most important and significant business and personal goals? Why are they important to you? How and when are you going to achieve them?

In my 20 years of working with clients, I realized that far too many were spending the majority of their time focusing on problems and obstacles – what was making them unhappy. There seems to be a tendency to focus on the past, looking backwards, but progress starts by taking action in the present. Future goals are realized by what we do today.

Are you focused on the goals you want to achieve or the things that are getting in the way?

You are always focusing on something, whether you are aware of it or not. The results you get are always the result of your focus.

The problem is this focus is usually not conscious focus; it’s more of an automatic focus. We mostly go through life on autopilot. We unconsciously focus on something we don’t want, and when we get it, we feel like a loser. We don’t even realize we could choose to create something completely different if we could only get out of the cycle of unconsciously focusing on everything except what we actually want.

We get what we focus on.

We have to train our minds to put all of its attention toward the most important and essential goals that have a long-term payoff. People who spend time thinking about “what is” will create more of “what is” in their life, more of the same old thing that they don’t even want. People who focus mostly on “what could be” – on possibilities and opportunities – will begin to create more of “what could be.”

Keep your focus centered on what you want to achieve.

Next week, I will discuss three steps to enjoying the benefits to focus.
