Teachers looking for the best place to start or continue their career should add Pennsylvania to their list, as the Keystone State ranks among the Top 10 best states for teachers.

WalletHub has published 2018’s Best & Worst States for Teachers. The list compares the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two key dimensions: Opportunity & Competition and Academic & Work Environment.

These were then evaluated using 22 key metrics, including average starting salary, income growth potential, average pension, tenure protections, quality of school system, public school spending per student, and share of teachers who feel supported by their administration.

Pennsylvania placed sixth, ranking highly in both of the key categories. It checked in at No. 7 in Opportunity & Competition and at No. 11 in Academic & Work Environment.

Pennsylvania was also among the Top 5 states with the highest annual salaries adjusted for the cost of living, where it placed third.

The best state for teachers is New York, while the worst is Hawaii.
