The No. 1 thing that wastes time is our lack of clarity, lack of a clear core purpose, personally and for our business. Without clarity, we spend our time working harder and longer, running faster on the rat wheel, being driven by the tyranny of the urgent and not really what matters most.

By clarity, I mean focus on what you really want, a focus on everything you do. Without clarity, you are pulled by the gravitation of the next, most urgent thing. The dictionary defines clarity as clearness of understanding and the absence of confusion.

Clarity is a formula for success:

“C” stands for a crystal-clear vision for your business and personal life. You must have that vision in mind to achieve the outcome you want.

“L” stands for a list of the specific things that need to get done daily to achieve your goals that support your vision. Once you have a clear destination on paper and a road map to achieve, you are on your way.

“A” stands for action. You must have a bias for concentrated action to achieve your goals and say no to everything that gets in the way of goal achievement. Goal-directed action pays big dividends in free time, better relationships, and more money!

“R” stands for responsibility. Everything in your life and business rises or falls on your willingness to take personal responsibility for your results.

“I” stands for intention. Our intention behind an action determines its effects. Every intention affects our outcomes. Without intentionality, days and weeks all blue into the next and we lose our focus on what really matters most. Intentionality helps us to perform at our best in all areas of our life and business. Nothing eats up time and energy more than playing the blame game.

“T” stands for timeliness. Timeliness means being fully in the present moment. Don’t get bogged down with rumination about the past and don’t be so concerned about the future that you don’t move forward. Plan for tomorrow like you’ll live for another 100 years but live today as if you’d die tomorrow. This way of living can also be translated as living a life of no regrets. Slow down to go faster! Be deliberate and intentional toward your most important goals.

“Y” stands for You Inc. It is important to know your talents and abilities and to invest in yourself to accelerate personal and business growth. You have your know-how and skills: a combination of your training, talents, and experience. Know-how is more than knowledge, it is APPLIED knowledge. You have your energy. This is your ability to work at top effectiveness and productivity. Your energy allows you to break through hindering circumstances to accomplish your goals. Also, you have your time. We’re not talking about time you put into your work. We’re talking about how you organize your time and make it work for you – time management. Next, you have your imagination. Imagination is your creative “spark.” It is your ability to foresee opportunities and plan how to handle them. You have the ability to communicate. How well you present your ideas and suggestions affects the achievement of your goals. Finally, you have the ability to gather the facts and make good decisions.

You cannot fail if you follow this formula. Remember: Clarity is the antidote to anxiety.

Next week, I will discuss results, and how they are a direct reflection of our self-image.
