TE Connectivity, with its U.S. headquarters in Berwyn, is the only Philadelphia-area company that has made it onto The Fortune 2018 Change the World list, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Swiss tech company joined giants like Apple and Toyota on the list. The ranking is based on how a company uses its profit-driven business to solve global issues.

TE Connectivity has 78,000 employees worldwide. Together, they design and produce sensors and connectors used in devices everywhere, from advanced aircraft to cable boxes.

“We are probably one of the largest companies that people have never heard of outside the engineering industry,” said Jim Toth, senior director of technology strategy for TE Connectivity USA.

What got Fortune’s attention is that TE’s products can be found in next-generation transportation projects. They are also key for automakers in building vehicles with lower carbon emission.

The “sensors help reduce pollution from diesel engines; they’re also crucial to the operation of experimental green tech like hydrogen fuel-cell engines and electric long-haul trucks,” according to the magazine.
