Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth made a surprise cameo appearance at a local men’s league game in Washington, D.C., writes Scott Allen for The Washington Post.

Werth joined the Dominion Bulls, who faced the Capital Black Sox at Madison High School in Vienna, Va.

Having recently left professional baseball, Werth needed a practice game before he joined a team of former major leaguers for the inaugural Bluegrass World Series in Louisville at the start of August.

“The Louisville thing came up and I thought, ‘I better do something before I go over there,’” said Werth.

The former Washington National was enthusiastically welcomed.

“Every time he came up, I looked around the fence and people were there with their phones, snapping photos, taking video,” said Black Sox manager and catcher Ivan Sciupac. “It became quite a big deal.”
