The average student debt in Pennsylvania is the highest in the nation, checking in at more than $35,000 per student for the second consecutive year, write Alison Burdo and Craig Ey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Even more troubling is the debt carried by those who earn a bachelor’s degree from the state’s public universities. According to a new study from LendEDU, six out of 10 public colleges in the country with the highest average student debt are in the Keystone State.

LendEDU assessed more than 1,000 public and private institutions using the most recent annual financial aid information from Peterson’s, the college data collection company. The result showed the average student debt per borrower in Pennsylvania is $36,193, an increase of nearly three percent from last year.

Nationwide, students attending public colleges generally have less debt than their peers at private schools. However, in Pennsylvania, the situation varies, even for students at Penn State. Depending on the campus, the average student loan debt could run as high as $45,746.
