The new owner of the Landenberg Store plans to turn the once-beloved landmark into a community centerpiece once again, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.

Mark Spena, who will take over the 146-year-old store later this month, has big plans for the business.

“I have so many ideas for this store, and I think it may take me three months of being here before I anticipate calming down and getting over the high of starting this business,” he said.

For generations, the Landenberg Store has been the unofficial epicenter of Landenberg. Over the years, it has been a meeting place, a stopover for cyclists and bikers, a convenience store, and a place where town criers shared news.

The store’s takeout food is also getting an upgrade. The store will still carry basic staples – such as milk, bread, and household products – alongside new, kicked-up versions of takeout meals, including entrees, pre-made pasta dishes and sauces, daily soups, and made-to-order salads and sandwiches.

“If a couple comes in here on a given night, the husband can get the chicken frittata and the wife gets the filet, and leave here for $30,” said Spena.
