After 72 Years in Business, The Hardware Center in Paoli to Close Its Doors This June

Steve Scartozzi plans to spend his retirement seeing his grandchildren after closing the Hardware Center.

After 72 years in business, The Hardware Center in Paoli will be closing its doors for good, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News. The store’s last day will be June 3.

The business was created in October of 1951 by brothers Steve and Greg Scartozzi and their father. After the business closes, Steve Scartozzi and other longtime employees will begin to enjoy retirement, while other younger employees will search for new jobs.

“I like relationships and helping people. I have no problem talking to the public and taking care of people. We’ve created so many relationships — we are one big family. After it’s over I should be able to relax,” said Scartozzi.

The Hardware Center was a long-standing pillar in the community. Service was key to the Scartozzi family, and their employees reflected that value over the years. The building is three stories tall, with the top floor being a children’s toy section, the middle floor selling hardware, and the basement housing the garden department.

Several potential buyers had an interest in continuing the legacy of the hardware store, but no sale came of it.

Scartozzi plans to visit more with his 10 grandchildren in retirement.
