A debate pondered for decades – what makes a beer great. MillerCoors introduced the conversation during the 1970s with their famed television commercials featuring high-profile celebrities – from Deacon Jones to Rodney Dangerfield – arguing the benefits of “Tastes Great!” versus “Less Filling!”
One thing no one can debate is the rising popularity of independent craft breweries. According to the Brewers Association, a nonprofit trade association representing small and independent breweries, the craft beer industry nationwide continues to experience strong growth. In 2017, craft breweries experienced $26 billion in retail dollar sales — an increase of eight percent from 2016. In addition, craft volume growth was five percent. That may seem modest, but when you factor in that traditional beer has experienced negative growth, it’s pretty impressive.
Much like the Miller Lite commercial, the reason for growth can be debated. Some like the fuller flavor craft beers provide. Others like the greater variety. But there’s another interesting reason why people choose craft breweries and beer – they want to support local and independent businesses.
And they have.
