FarmerJawn, the urban farming initiative led by Christa Barfield, has recently launched Saturday Field Trips to its farm in West Chester, writes Laura Swartz for the Philadelphia Magazine.
Each Saturday through October, people from the region can hop on a yellow school bus for a trip to the farm.
When they arrive, they can enjoy a tour, shop at the farmers market, connect with the origins of their food, and learn about sustainable agriculture practices.
A visit to the 123-acre farm at Westtown School costs $10, but that amount is applied to a market purchase of $30 or more. It offers visitors a look at FarmerJawn’s methods and facilities, highlights community connections, and shares goals for its future.
Participants also get to pick and taste the fresh herbs at the greenhouse and pot their own take-home plants in the market’s community space, “to keep growing change.”
The store showcases some of the region’s best products. It offers not just FarmerJawn’s own organic produce but also stocks other goods that are sourced from Philadelphia area-based farmers, markets, and small businesses, such as Poi Dog’s Chili Peppah Water and HotBox Philly’s hot sauces.
In addition, the ticket includes a tasting at the market.
