A team comprised of seven fourth-graders from Wayne’s New Eagle Elementary School in the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District recently won first place at the state finals of the Odyssey of the Mind competition and thus secured a spot at the world finals.

Odyssey of the Mind is the world’s largest competition where children creatively solve assigned problems. Parents and coaches sign a contract stating they will not help or influence the children in any way.

The team placed first in Division 1, Problem 5. This asked the students to create an intergalactic hangout where creatures throughout the universe can meet to recharge and relax.

Students were required to create an original script and a portable set with props and costumes. They then had to successfully perform for eight minutes or less.

“This is one of the rare instances where students are given complete control over what they produce and how they produce it,” said Marisol Perez, one of the team’s coaches.

Nearly 800 teams of students from 20 countries will compete at the world finals at Iowa State University later this month.
