A new school bus in the Downingtown Area School District is a veritable science class on wheels that teaches students coding, robotics, and other science skills, writes Kathy Boccella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Mobile Innovation Lab is loaded up with Legos, iPads, and other high-tech gadgets.

The 40-foot bus will officially be unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony today. Throughout the school year, it will visit all 10 elementary schools in the district to introduce kids to state-of-the-art experiments in STEAM fields.

The Mobile Innovation Lab is quite possibly the first learning lab on wheels in Pennsylvania. Teacher Brittany Schwab is also probably the only teacher in the state who had to get a commercial driver’s license for the new school year.

According to chief academic officer Matt Friedman, the $350,000 to convert the 72-seat school bus donated by Krapf Bus into a vehicle for innovation was covered by Downingtown Educational Foundation and individual donors.

“The reason we wanted a bus is that our 10 elementary schools are all different sizes,” said Friedman. “Not all of our schools have the space for a lab.”
