West Chester University recently joined the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education in celebrating the expansion of the latter’s Center City space, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Having opened last year, it serves adults who have completed some college courses but do not have a degree. Currently, around 375 students are taking classes from West Chester or Bloomsburg universities there.

The expansion was needed as demand quickly exceeded capacity, according to Kathleen Howley, the PASSHE’s deputy vice chancellor for academic and student affairs.

“Now we can serve more students and more programs, which means employers in the region have an opportunity for an even greater workforce,” she said.

At first, according to WCU president Christopher Fiorentino, the response was not as high as expected. However, the university ramped up its recruiting and soon hit capacity.

“We had to stop bringing new students in because we didn’t have anywhere to put them,” said Fiorentino.

The PASSHE has since added six classrooms and 11 offices.
