Philly Startup Leaders, a network of entrepreneurs in the city dedicated to helping build and provide resources to startups, has named West Chester University graduate Kiera Smalls its new executive director, writes Diane Mastrull for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The move comes five months after the network admitted “poor efforts around diversity and inclusion.”

Smalls, an African-American woman, will ensure that all parts of the community will have their voice.

“It’s extremely important to make sure our impact reflects the demographics of the city,” she said.

Smalls, who majored in criminal justice at WCU, began her career in human resources. She then joined Bike Transit, a local startup that operates bike-sharing systems nationwide, and built and maintained the program for Indego, the city’s first bike-share initiative. She’s also co-founder of City Fit Girls.
