Pennsylvania’s first online gambling sites are expected to launch in the final quarter of this year, and all signs point to them being an even bigger success than those in the record-setting New Jersey market, writes Martin Derbyshire for PlayUSA.com.

According to an announcement made last week by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, existing Pennsylvania casinos will soon be able to apply for online gambling licenses.

The state will open up a 120-day window for applications. During the initial 90 days, Pennsylvania casinos will get a chance to apply for a license to operate in three online gambling categories – Online Poker, Online Table Games, and Online Slots – at a cost of $10 million.

Casinos that prefer individual licenses for the separate categories can do so for $4 million each. If any of the 39 licenses available remain unclaimed after 120 days, other qualified gaming companies will be able to apply for them.

While licenses will be distributed earlier, the first site is not expected before the fourth quarter. According to Kevin O’Toole, executive director of the gaming board, the board is currently creating temporary regulations to govern online gambling operations.
