Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children

The Connelly Foundation awarded a $25,000, two-year grant to the Friends Association to be used for the Homeless to Independence initiatives.

The grant will be used by case managers working with each family to build on their existing strengths and help them identify education and services that they need to successfully transition from poverty/homelessness to permanent housing and financial self-sufficiency.

“More than 780 children and their parents experience homelessness in Chester County each year, with an additional 1,900 children and their parents facing eviction,” said Catherine Friedman, the Friends Association’s Executive Director. “We are grateful for the support from the Connelly Foundation for new initiatives that help us to continue to grow to meet the needs of our community.”

The Hickman Friends Senior Community of West Chester

The Hickman has added a new three-story building with 74 additional living units, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

The Anna T. Jeanes Building has 74 rooms with 22 private and shared studio suites in a secure memory care neighborhood with a secure outdoor garden. An additional 52 personal care private rooms will be added to the facility, which currently houses 40 rooms.

“The most important thing is that we will be able to support more older adults who want to live in a community with one another,” said Pamela Leland, The Hickman’s executive director.

Chester County Orphans’ Court

The court is seeking volunteers to serve county individuals who require guardianship – assisting the court in maintaining contact with any person deemed by the court who cannot make decisions about their daily lives, where they live, or medical or financial matters.

The amount of volunteer time for visits to individuals who need guardianship is flexible, and training for the guardian program includes topics such as the guardianship process, individual’s rights, Alzheimer’s disease, and information on public agencies that provide the guardianship services.

Anyone interested in becoming part of the guardian program is invited to take part in a free training session that will be held on Thursday, April 12 from 9 AM-1:30 PM at the Chester County Justice Center, located at 201 West Market Street in West Chester.
