The eyesore that was the former Sonoco paper mill plant was demolished Friday morning in Downingtown, thus paving the way for what officials are hopeful will become a new train station and much more, writes Ginger Dunbar for the Daily Local News.

“The demolition of the paper mill is the first step of a revitalization project that marks the largest private investment in Downingtown in memory,” said Sen. Andrew Dinniman. “This represents a sea change for the borough – one that will transform its economy, reimagine large swaths of space, and significantly improve the way we think about, live in, and travel through Downingtown.”

The Hankin Group acquired almost 70 acres in East Caln Township at the intersection of Boot Road and Route 322, and aims to build 442 residential units atop 14,200 square feet of retail space, as well as 100,000 square feet of commercial office space.

“The Hankin Group’s plans … mean new job and career opportunities, new stores and restaurants, and top-notch housing accommodations,” Dinniman said. “From a transportation perspective, the new train station will be a true multimodal hub with enhanced rail infrastructure, upgraded amenities, and links to our trail system.”

The Hankin Group has worked extensively with borough and PennDOT officials on the project since 2015 to advance the project.
