John Abel of Abel Brothers Towing in Malvern has received a rare commendation for courageous professionalism shown on the job, when a human life hung in the balance.

The commendation was presented by American Towman Magazine during Festival Night at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in late November. Festival Night is part of the American Towman Exposition, the world’s largest trade show and convention for emergency road service providers.

Since the first Festival Night in 1989, the awarding of the American Towman Commendation has been a treasured event for the towing and recovery industry.

According to Abel Brothers Towing, in September, a quarry-transporter truck fell about halfway down the wall of an enormous quarry and was resting upside-down with the operator still in the machine. Abel Brothers was called in to secure the transporter for the rescuers to get the driver out safely.

“They used my truck to rig off of and used my line to go down,” John Abel said. “The speed with which I arrived and helped to secure was essential to the driver’s survival.”
