The Exton office of Australia-based ARRB Group has rolled out new technology that allows its clients to get a beneath-the-surface view of a road’s quality, writes Brian McCullough for The Pottstown Mercury.

The company’s customers include state transportation departments, municipalities, and the federal government.

Chad Murnane, ARRB’s chief operating officer and a native of Australia who moved to Downingtown to start the company’s American operations, said that road surfaces can be misleading.

Those that might look cracked and crumbled can turn out to be fine underneath and only require resurfacing, while others can look fine but need replacing due to structural weakness.

ARRB packs the advanced technology into a tractor trailer that is driven along a road to survey it. In some cases, the company uses a smaller van.

“We just finished a big project in Virginia, four-and-a-half-thousand miles of primary roads,” said Murnane. “We found some that needed attention. The more data you have, the better decisions you can make.”

ARRB currently has one truck in the U.S. and two in Australia, and it has sold several in South Africa, China, and Germany.
