Veteran Meghan Fitzpatrick is honoring her fallen comrades by initiating a cleanup of the Lindley Hill Cemetery, according to a staff report from Daily Local News.

The Downingtown resident noticed the untidy state of the cemetery while on a run through the neighborhood. She then realized that many of the names on the tombstones were of African-American Veterans who had fought in the Civil War, WWI, and WWII.

Fitzpatrick took a photograph before reaching out to Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell . The pair found the owner of the cemetery was Bethel AME Church of Downingtown, which promptly joined the cleanup initiative.

Several of the soldiers buried at the cemetery were residents who were a part of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first volunteer African-American regiment in the Civil War.

This prompted non-profit leaders, including Fonz Newsuan of the Movement Community Development Corporation, to join the initiative.

“MCDC joins our entire community in helping to honor their memory by cleaning up Lindley Hill Cemetery,” said Newsuan.

The cleanup is scheduled for December 9, the morning of the Downingtown Christmas Parade.
