Wild Peacock Sets Up Home in Malvern

For six years, Harry, an adult peacock, has taken up residence in Malvern. Most residents aren’t bothered by the exotic bird, who perches on roofs and struts through backyards. (Image and caption via philly.com)

Wild peacock named ‘Harry the Peacock’ by the local residents has found his home in Malvern for the last six years, leaving only for the mating season in summer but always returns,  writes Vinny Vella for Philly.com.

The peacock became an unofficial member of Jules Dewey’s family from the moment he arrived. In those days, resident on Dewey’s block in Malvern’s Charlestown Oaks development flocked to take pictures of the eye-catching bird.

When he left nobody expected to see him again, but Harry returned at the end of August. That prompted Dewey to start researching peacock diets.

“Someone had to feed him,” said Dewey.

She consulted with Anita Thompson, a former neighbor and widow of Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson who raised peacocks at his Colorado home.

But despite being out of his usual element, Harry has no issues at his new home. He roosts under Dewey’s deck on cement pavers that protect him from the frozen ground.

Now Dewey is considering moving with her family in two years, but the question is what to do with Harry?

“I would feel responsible for him if I moved. This is his home base,” said Dewey.
