Kevin Dunleavy, West Bradford man who found out in August it would cost him $45,000 to connect his newly installed solar array to the PECO utility grid, has received some welcome news, writes Frank Kummer for Philly.com.

Two months after he received the shocking bill, PECO officials informed him that the energy company had formed a group to address alternative energy hookups like his.

“They said, ‘We have some good news for you. But we can’t promise you anything until the end of September,’” said Dunleavy. “I had no idea what that meant.”

Finally, Dunleavy got the news he was hoping for. The costs had been reassessed and the revised estimate was for a much more reasonable $4,500, one-tenth of the original estimate.

According to company’s spokesman, Doug Oliver, Peco’s newly formed Distributed Energy Group is the reason for the change. Oliver said that the new group had been created after the company realized there were issues with its pricing for customers who wanted to become more environmentally friendly.

It’s definitely good news,” said Dunleavy.
