Success of Malvern’s Willisbrook Farm a Testament to America’s Pumpkin Craving

By

Malvern’s Willisbrook Farm is helping the public satisfy its annual pumpkin craving by growing and selling some of the best in the country, writes Tim Silfies for WFMZ 69 News.

Just how much people love pumpkins is most obvious in the fall, when its unique flavor takes over everything from desserts and beer to morning coffee.

According to historian Cindy Ott, author of Pumpkin: The Curious History of an American Icon, our affinity for pumpkins can be traced back to when agriculture was everything.

“It’s supporting a way of life,” she said.

Willisbrook Farm has been around since the 1800s, and pumpkins still account for almost 75 percent of its revenue.

“It’s our biggest crop,” said Bob Lange, who owns the farm with his sister. The pair also runs a business called Sugartown Strawberries, allowing people to pick their own produce, including pumpkins.

Lange said he can often see the nostalgia in his customers’ eyes when they shop for pumpkins.

“It’s kind of like a throwback to being able to go out, take a hayride” he said. “Pick a pumpkin, and feel like you’re getting back to your roots.”
