Years of improper billing, inadequate staffing, and Medicare violations picked up by Genesis HealthCare as baggage that came with acquisitions are finally catching up with the Kennett Square nursing home operator.
Genesis HealthCare recently settled with the U.S. Justice Department by agreeing to pay $53.6 million, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Harold Brubaker.
The Genesis HealthCare settlement puts to bed six federal lawsuits and investigations. The infractions center on two recently acquired business units, Skilled Healthcare Group and Sun Healthcare Group, at a time well before Genesis HealthCare took over.
The billing of “medically unnecessary therapy and hospice services, and grossly substandard nursing care” was cited in the date range of 2003 to 2013.
