West Chester’s Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children held a Volunteer Service Award Ceremony to honor 26 volunteers with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Due in large part to the more than 5,000 volunteer hours logged in 2016, Friends Association was able to provide a safe place to sleep, permanent housing, and renewed hope for 96 families and 187 children.

Chester County Women’s Services, a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center based in Coatesville, raised more than $107,000 at its annual fundraising banquet and silent auction last week at the Downingtown Country Club.
CCWS exists to educate and empower individuals and their families to make life-affirming choices. All services are 100 percent free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally, and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program, and community referrals. Offices are located in Coatesville, Kennett Square, and West Chester.
An intensive, two-day vegetable breeding workshop will take place on June 17 and June 24, from 9 AM-12 PM, at North Star Orchard in Cochranville. The workshop, geared toward the more experienced gardener, will be led by NSO Garden Manager Kevin Booth and Greenhouse Manager Lena Dati.
Over the course of two days, attendees will learn the importance of vegetable breeding and everything necessary to start breeding their own vegetable varieties in their home gardens, which is a step beyond simply saving seeds. Workshop topics will include plant genetics, selection, and instruction into breeding processes used at NSO.
Participants will spend time in the garden, making actual crosses of several vegetables. Once the seeds are harvested and dried later in the season, workshop attendees can then expect to receive their share of the seeds in the mail.
This workshop requires attendees to register beforehand. Click here for more information or to register.
