The rise of international terrorism has put local Muslims on the defensive, but the Islamic Society of Chester County is coaching teens on how to talk through the misconceptions in healthy ways.

“Almost every student has only two or three Muslims in his or her grade,” said Islamic Networks Group Youth Coordinator Ishaq Pathan in a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Dan Geringer.

“So each one may be put in situations where he or she represents the sole Muslim response to questions such as, ‘What do you think about ISIS? Are you forced to wear a hijab? Why are you fasting?’”

ING conducted a recent workshop at the Islamic Society of Chester County, but the outreach is nothing new.

“Relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims in West Chester, Downingtown, and Exton are friendly because the Islamic Society of Chester County has been reaching out for 22 years to other faiths and other ethnic groups,” the article stated, paraphrasing mosque executive secretary Salim Bootwala.
