Giant Wins Big Bid to Sell Beer in Phoenixville

By

Giant Food Stores has a giant thirst for selling beer and wine at its supermarkets across the state, and it recently poured out $454,301 to buy a liquor license in Phoenixville.

The winning bid was the second-most expensive in the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s second-ever inactive license auction since Act 39 authorized such auctions last August, according to a Daily Local News report by Brian McCullough.

Giant also won the most expensive license in Abington Township for $463,802, and the chain has now bought 19 inactive licenses through the auction.

“It’s something our customers have expressed an interest in having,” said Manager of Public and Community Relations Samantha Krepps.

Giant already sells beer and wine from its supermarket in Exton.

The 42 licenses in the latest round of the auction drew 90 bids, and all proceeds flow into the state general fund.
