Wegmans in Downingtown celebrated becoming one of the first 200 grocery stores in the state able to sell wine by popping open a bottle of sparkling wine with state representatives Harry Lewis and Duane Milne last Friday, writes Lauren Parker-Gill for The Times of Chester County.

The celebration comes after an archaic law dating back to Prohibition was revised in June to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores.

“It’s such a momentous occasion to get to this point; it’s a very critical first step.” said Milne.

For the past month, Mechanicsburg’s Wegmans has been a test store for wine sales. As everything went off without a hitch, the chain decided it was time to roll it out to its other locations in the state, said store manager Kurt Husebo.

Several local wineries are featured at the store.

Wegmans currently offers around 400 different wines, and plans to expand this to more than 800 by Thanksgiving.
