Analysis: Chester County Goes Blue, but Republicans Hold Seats in All Local Contests

By

The Marshalltown polling place yesterday.

So, as you’ve probably heard by now, Hillary Clinton carried Chester County in yesterday’s election. And she did so by a sizable margin:

Clinton-Kaine: 52%

Trump-Pence: 42%

Contrary to what MANY pollsters predicted, winning Chester County wasn’t a great indicator of how much success Chester County’s down-the-ballot Democrats would have. It didn’t mean much of anything, actually.

Of the other 14 local political campaigns that voters were asked to weigh in on yesterday, not one of them turned to blue from red. The results frustrated Democratic party leaders, who hoped the general election turnout for HRC (Hillary Rodham Clinton) would buoy their candidates in the state House.

But the closest campaign came down to just 78 votes, and in the end, West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta (D) was unable to defeat incumbent Dan Truitt (R).

So our immediate political-scape remains unchanged.

Here’s the breakdown for other races.

Mike Parrish (D) lost to incumbent Ryan Costello (R) by almost 10 points.

Patrick Meehan (R) defeated challenger Mary Ellen Balchunis (D) by a huge margin – more than 20 percentage points.

Thomas Killion (R) managed to hold on to his seat by getting a 10-point margin in Chester County.

Andy Dinniman, the ONLY democrat representing Chester County in Harrisburg, held on to his seat easily. He beat challenger Jack London by 13 points.

John Lawrence (R) beat challenger Nancy Dean in the 13th District race.

In what many thought would be a win for the Dems, Josh Maxwell (D) lost to incumbent Harry Lewis (R) by almost four points.

Becky Corbin (R) beat James Burns (D) handily in the 155th.

Newcomer Eric Roe (R) beat Susan Rzucidlo (D) by more than six points in the 158th District. Roe will replace (R) Christ Ross in Harrisburg come January.

And in Phoenixville, Hans van Mol lost by approximately nine points to incumbent (R) Warren Kampf.

And that’s where we’re at. Although many Chester County voters opted for HRC over Trump, they still preferred their local Republican reps over the challengers from across the aisle.

Thanks to all the pollsters who worked hard and into the late hours of the evening to get these results to us. See you next year!
