Seeing the abandoned Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in East Whiteland Township fall victim to nature and neglect prompted Alvin Terrell to roll up his sleeves and take matters into his own hands, writes Kristin Holmes for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The semi-retired data analyst and kindergarten teacher is pledging to reclaim the church and restore it to its former glory.

“I just feel like the people buried here deserved better,” said Terrell. “This is history.”

Terrell has already teamed up with local volunteers to clear the two-acre tract on Bacton Hill Road. The eclectic group that includes teachers, a pastor, and girl and boy scouts has already started wading through the towering wall of weed and poison ivy, and hauling away debris.

Terrell also plans to create a foundation in collaboration with his son, Joseph, who runs a social-media website called Greekstree.com to help with the cost of the renovation. They hope the site, used to connect members of fraternities and sororities, will help harness the time and money of its members for many charitable projects such as the restoration of the Ebenezer church.
