Joan Nicholson, a resident of The Kendal at Longwood retirement community in Kennett Square, has been holding daily antiwar protests along busy Route 1 for 11 years, writes Katie Park for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I’m out here for about two hours every day in the summer,” said Nicholson. “And in the winter, for about an hour and a half.”

Her largest sign that is always on display reads “Stop U.S. Wars for Profit Plunder Worldwide.” Her other signs evolve with current events, such as one that reads “Stop U.S. War on Yemen.”

She gets mixed reactions to her protests. Some cars slow down, some honk in greeting or support, while others are not as amicable and offer a singer-finger salute.

Nicholson has a long history of activism. She is a Pennsylvania-born Quaker and was an ardent anti-Vietnam War activist. In the 1970s, she was one of eight members of the Flower City Conspiracy who broke into a federal building in Rochester, N.Y., and destroyed Vietnam War draft cards.

Nicholson has continued her activism in the decades since. And despite her age, she has no plans of slowing down any time soon.
